About the Artwork:
Responding to increasing restrictions on gender-affirming care and the continued politicisation of trans lives, the work reflects on visibility, care, and collective resilience. Drawing inspiration from birds, which perceive a broader spectrum of colour than humans, the mural invites us to recognise the beauty and complexity of identities beyond dominant ways of seeing.
This print was adapted from the mural painted in the artist's studio for Pride 2026.
Artist's note:
The crow takes centre stage in ‘Becoming’. I see crows and transness/ queerness occupying similar symbolic terrain where both are socially othered.
Galaxies form in its eyes, representing the infinite potential each of us carry when we are able to live full lives.
From the eye, a flower blooms. This is drawn from the Camellia flower, and when I first saw it I was entranced by how perfectly its petals arranged themselves- almost like a golden ratio. It unfolds in perfect succession, mirroring the sentiment of how I feel towards transness and queerness- despite how we are othered for it.
The pansies and white roses watch over like wise guardians. They symbolise and are in remembrance of those who have fought for us, who have shown us the possibility of existing fully, who have lost their lives to transphobia, homophobia and ignorance.
The moths take this message further, symbolising transformation, endurance and protection.
Together, ‘Becoming’ is a message of love and solidarity. I hope with this piece you feel a little less alone.
